As someone whose weakness is anything athletic, sports writing terrified me at first. But I found my niche in sports features and also challenged myself to branch out and research games for previews or recaps.

The Granny Shot

A lighthearted sports feature was something I had never tried before, but after observing their games, doing lengthy interviews and rewriting my draft multiple times, I came up with "The Granny Shot," and it's one of my favorites.

 

The grannies and their families reached out after it was published thanking me for recognizing their fun hobby.

Sports-Feature 

Dancing Davis 

Sports injury stories tend to be cheesy and sometimes overdone, but this one was different, and I challenged myself to  write it in an interesting way. 

​

The story was originally about an injured dancer who could no longer perform at halftime, but I soon realized the marching band member who stepped in to learn his part in three days was the interesting part. I quickly adapted and changed my draft to fit that focus, which changed the story from a typical injury story to a unique one that our publication had never told before.

Game Preview

As someone who has never played basketball, I wanted to step out of my comfort zone with this preview for the biggest basketball game of the year. 

 

By interviewing students, doing my own research and looking at the team records, I wrote this story in three sections — the rivalry, the preparations and the game.
