While I wrote these stories, my parents would find me huddled over my laptop with empty Starbucks cups by my side as I lost track of time searching for data or finding the best wording. News and news-feature stories intrigue me like nothing else because of the impact they can create.
News-Feature: NSPA 2nd Place Best of Show in COVID Coverage 2020
The Price to Party
In the fall of 2020, college kids partied while COVID-19 cases multiplied in their towns. I'd noticed people breezing through the semester without thinking about the effect these parties had on their community, so I wrote this story to bring that issue to light.
I researched CDC statistics and legal ordinances to show the intensity, while anonymous student sources admitted their mindset. Community members voiced their concerns and thanked me for discussing this issue because it opened students' eyes to their impact and the reality.

Buy From Black
This story highlights the importance of supporting Black-owned businesses by bringing attention to their hidden systematic struggles.

I interviewed several local Black business owners to hear their experience and searched through statistics to find solid data about their disadvantage. I received several texts after publishing saying they will now shop Black-owned businesses — this story impacted their mindset and my own as well.

Young & Defenseless
As the number of students traveling abroad increased and some experienced violence, this story was written to emphasize the importance of safety in study abroad programs.
​
This was my first cover story, so I learned how to gather over 10 sources for the first time. I interviewed several East students and alum, self-defense professionals and concerned parents, as well as researched policies and statistics from the U.S. Department of State and Department of Justice.

Prairie Village Protests
To write this story well, my co-editor and I needed to be present for the protest in our community. Taking notes on our phones and experiencing the reality of the social justice movement helped us with details and provided a deeper understanding.

I interviewed five leaders and community members and made the infographic at the bottom of the story. My co-editor interviewed a few others, and we wrote the story together.
